"Our most important work is to control air pollution. Once we start getting rid of the air there is a lot less pollution," said Jameel Al-Odan, who co-lead the study.
The research team is led by scientist Rizwan Abbas, of the University of California Institute of Technology in Berkeley, who analyzed data from two cities of three countries and conducted several experiments in which the plants produced oxygen. He had expected to find the results due to the research team's use of high quality materials at their facilities but chose the small number of plants in Al-Odan's small lab, located in one of the U.S. cities.
"On average, we know that one of the most effective, most expensive things in our environment is planting and growing organic and wood," said co-author Rizwan Abbas, of UCLA. "We don't know at this time what effect that will have on the people of the future."
The findings suggest that removing the pollution can reduce air pollution by as much as 10 percent, or 10 trillion metric tons. The research was conducted on three different cities: Al-Odan's office in Berkeley, with a focus on building soil, and one of the two sites in San Francisco.
