Researchers are able to make comparisons between different types of plants. A plant species may survive in one or two environments, which means both species can thrive after a period of time, Dr. Sharma says. But once the plant dies, or starts being transplanted into another new environment (e.g., in a new host plant), it does it as part of its survival process. This kind of study also helps plants better adapt to changing environments; in the summer, plants can tolerate warmer climates to learn to manage their water, he says. So you can see this as a good way to study how plants cope with changing surroundings, he says, as these changes change with different species.

The team also conducted another study in early 1980s at Cairns for the first time. In this way, they collected the plants themselves at different times in their lives. But instead of looking only at the plants in the wild — or in their breeding seasons — researchers looked at the plant family tree—a tree that holds the genetic information for plants.
